Okay, Here is my issue. I went out yesterday to start the vehicle. It started but had a bad knock. I shut off the car. Then the vehicle wouldn't start. Turns over, just no start. Here's where it gets wierd. Had a buddy come over and he started tapping on the starter and the vehicle started. Ran great.
Probably a atarter issue, but should I rebuild the starter, or should I get a new one.
I love my baby and It's just not right to have her sitting in my garage not being driven.
Some folks replace the solenoid contacts, others replace the whole starter. When I replaced the starter in my Avalon, it cost ~20 bucks more to just replace the whole thing Vs replacing the solenoid contacts, so I just replaced the whole thing. I think I priced 'em at NAPA, not Toyota.

You can get new contacts and plunger for about $15 and it is a VERY easy DIY to install. While I had my 99 Avalon starter out I also disassembled the business end to inspect and lube. This is a great DIY project. Very easy to remove starter (at least on my V6) and very easy to replace contacts/plunger.
I had the same thing happen with my avy. One day it finally died and woudlnt start at all. So I went and bought a new stater and installed it and guess what nothing. After messing with it for 2 days i finally took it to the mechanic and it turns out it was the timing belt. So just be sure it is the starter before you buy it because once you install it you cant get your money back.

Good point! I missed the part where the OP said car would "turn over" but not start. To OP: If your engine was turning over, your starter was doing its job. Now, if your starter was just "clicking" you probably have a starter problem but again, check your electrical connections first.

YOICKS!!! I missed it too! I saw the "tapping on the starter" comment and incorrectly leaped to the starter being bad. Like artbuc says, your starter is doing its job. So it could be a lot of things. Check the big 3; spark, fuel, & air.
