I have a 1998 Avalon and I just recently replaced ALL the rear taillight bulbs. (It DID get that pesky idiot light to go off). I had some difficulty with the trunk lamp assembly basically coming apart in my hand. Afterwards, my dash clock was kinda blinking (irregularly) and faded out at towards the right side of the display. It is also losing time. I've tried looking in my Haynes manual but the only wiring diagram are those "Typical of 1998 Toyotas" and I cannot locate the dash clock on the diagram. Because this problem started at the time of the lamp replacement, they must be connected somehow. The trunk light is now disconnected until I find a suitable lamp.
Any ideas?
PS: The replacement lamp from Kragens was not correct, the original looked like a regular glass fuse. The Kragens lamp was fatter with pointy metal ends. Anyone know where I can get the correct replacement?
This also affects all interior lighting. Anyone have a REAL wiring schematic for a '98 Avalon? I need to fix this and don't have the information I need.
Same thing happened to me. Went to replace the trunk light and took out what I thought was a lightbulb, but turned out to be a burned fuse. Advance Auto Parts didn't have the correct bulb and I didn't put it back together until I could get to the dealership. On the way home, my clock was semi-lit, loosing time, and I lost all interior lights, key fob doesn't work, and the power release button in the glove box for the trunk doesn't work. Now I'm locked out of my trunk because when I bought the car 1.5 weeks ago I was only given the valet key.
Let me know if you find the right bulb. According to rockauto, it's a tubular bulb like a fuse with pointy ends. They will only sell them in a 10 pack for $1 each.
I just wanted to post a reply to my previous posting to report I have fixed my issue. The clock finally died and I didn't have any interior lights and couldn't get into my trunk. I was able to remove the back seat and cloth backing and crawl through the steel frame. I replaced the fuse I had removed from the trunk light with a new fuse and my clock and interior lights still didn't work. I checked the fuse block under the dash and didn't find any blown fuses. I checked the fuse block under the hood and located a blown 7.5 amp fuse. There was a spare fuse in the block and after replacing it, everything works again. I hope this helps someone else.
Thanks fourwheeler. I had checked every fuse in the interior fusebox. I didn't know there was another. I located the engine compartment fusebox, and I found the open 7.5amp fuse. Replaced it and everything works right. Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry you had to go through all that hassle!!
thanks for the suggestion artemousehue. I took the car to the dealership and although they could cut a key from the vin, they can't program the key to work with the car because all i have is a valet key. They could reprogram the computer to accept a new master key for $98 plus the new master key for $47.
I ended up asking the used car lot i purchased the car from to contact the dealership they bought the car from at auction to see if there were any extra keys turned in. They also contacted the previous owners who were in AZ and were kind enough to send me a master key in the mail. Just FYI if anyone else finds themselves in the same situation I was in.
Glad you figured out a solution to your problem. My library has some good-quality,thick, heavy auto manuals for some U.S. and foreign cars + trucks. Some times I am lucky and able to find a detailed wiring diagram or other info in the manual and then can copy it on the Xerox machine. Try your local library or call first if you live in small town.
1)I have a '98 avalon xls and have never seen a damn light in the trunk!
Does anybody know if all models (first-generation) avalons had a trunk light?
any rough idea where it is located in the trunk?
thanks,michael
Thanks Russ - this is EXACTLY what happened to me! you saved me a lot of time and hassle. Now I just have to find this "fuse looking" bulb in my trunk. I know it's a light bulb, since it has that plastic thing over it, and the auto parts store and sylvania keep quoting the WRONG BULB that does not and will not fit. (Sylvania 3012 I think) WRONG! so the person tells me - it's a fuse, and the dummy I am bought some fuses and I'm not going to bother to take it back now. But as for the 7.5 fuse - I can tell time again! also all my dome lights work again

After all the looking around and frustration, I ended up going to the local Toyota dealership and asking for a bulb "Oh sure, no problem!" $9 later I had my very own fuse-looking light that worked!
