Does the shifter has lights that come on with the headlights, that indicate what gear you are in?

Yes. There is one bulb beneath the shifter. Replaced this in my 98 when it burned out - not particularly difficult.

Thanks ottogaus, it always bugged me that they wouldnt light up, might also replace my burnt out hvac lights while I am at it.

btw, do you know the part number for the shifter bulbs, im guessing they might be a dealer item.

It has been awhile since I replaced the bulb, but I do believe the bulb is a standard one that can be purchased at your local auto parts store. The original bulb has a plastic cover over the top (I refer to it as the bulb condom). You may or may not be able to remove this from the burned out bulb to the new bulb - be careful. If not, this is a dealer item. Hope this helps.
