New radio, possibly amp

I've got a 1998 Avalon with the 7 speaker setup. I replaced the speakers in the doors, and wired a second sub-woofer into the trunk. I hate the factory cd player because if its any colder than 55 degrees it refuses to play a CD. I use the cassette player to listen to my iPod, but it to is starting to not function when cold.
Unless anybody has tips on how to resolve these problems I'm willing to take the next step.
I'm looking to replace the radio, and the amp if need be.
Any suggestions on a radio/amp combinations that are under $250?

Any tips on making the installation as simple as possible?

I apologize for any n00bishness, but I don't have any experience!
I'll post pics when I'm done with the installation.

crutchfield will sell you as close to a drop-in as is available, and they have kits with adapters and harnesses and instructions that are vehicle specific.

Make sure you track down the right adapter for that wiring harness. They can be a bit confusing.

there are two different kits one allows you to hook into the factory amp the other allows you to bypass it. an aftermarket radio will put out more than the factory amp. the thing is you'll have to go behind the glove box to get to the plugs you need to use.

the avalon stereo is like the camry and es300. i have the plug to use the factory amp...i will be bypassing it soon.

also there is a stickie for the stereo installation for this generation camry at the top of the gen 1 avalon forum.

Click here. i hope it helps you like it did me
