Gas / Fuel Gauge Adjustment?

I have a '98 Avalon and the gas gauge has not been very accurate. After filling up, it will show about 3/4 to 7/8 full (after several minutes) and when it gets to empty, I still have another 1/4 tank left. Does anyone know just how this gauge works? Is there any adjustment that can be made? Bad sending unit? Ideas?

I purchased the car /w 150K miles and now has over 200K. Love this car!

Mine does the same thing. If you read the owners manual it talks about the gauge being a bit delayed. When my gauge reads empty I can only fill up with 15 gallons on a 18 gal tank. I suspect it's adjusted this way to help minimize fuel pump burn out. I wouldn't worry about it and just fill up slightly more often. It's cheaper than a new fuel pump which are not fun to replace.
