Question Code Help, Please

I was driving home from work and my check engine light came on, I went the local auto parts store where they hooked up a scanner and told me it was reading code "440 - Evap" can anyone tell me what this means or could possibly mean. The car is a 1997 Avy XL with 104,000 miles and I would like to add that I love my car.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Might be as simple as a loose gas cap.

Typical problems are the charcoal cannister, hose leak in EVAP system.

The Autozone website may have the code explanation.

Ditto. It is somewhere in the Evap system. There are usually several hoses that deliver to and from the charcoal canister and sometimes they break or come off. Gas gap off would do it too. There is a small possibility that it could be a sensor relative to the same system...but more likely an air leak in the system like toyomoho suggests. Autozone will give a printout with the most likely causes when you have your car read there.
