97 strut mount

Hey guys - I just got the word from a mechanic I trust that the knocking sound coming from the front suspension is the strut mounts. Do I need just the bearing? Which parts should I replace? Does anyone have a link to the procedure?

thanks

Mark

This link takes you to a Camry Forum with Factory Service Manuals. The struts and strut mounts are identical so you will find everything you need there.

How many miles? Are your struts & mounts original? If they are, I am amazed they have lasted this long. You should definitely replace the mounts. The bearings last much longer than the mounts but I would also replace the bearings while you are in there. I strongly suggest you buy factory parts. Do NOT waste your money on KYB mounts. KYB makes great struts but they only resell mounts and they are junk. I have heard good things about Moog strut mounts but do not have first hand knowledge.

Just finished replacing the control arm bushings on my 97. I thought the shocks/mounts were shot too, but they function normally. Check your ball joints and stabilizer bushings, they can cause rattling noises as well. Are your tires wearing on the inside/outside?

My 97 still has the original struts and made "the clunking noise" for years. I was browsing the forum a couple of weeks ago and it seems that the mount is what makes the clunk. I went home and sprayed some silicone on the tops of the mounts and the clunk has gone away.......

I may still need struts, etc. because of the age of the car but not having the clunk is a whole new world..
