1988 camry overheat

I have a 1988 camry with 233,000 miles on it. I have an issue with radiator full of coolant the vehicle still gets hot no air bubbles in radiator fill area. when the car starts to heat up towards the top of the temp range i turn the defrost on and it goes right back to the middle. what would cause it to heat up like that? is the thermostat bad? water pump bad?

check your thermostat it could be stickin on ya that would be the first thing I'd look into, that's what it sounds like.

is that the 192 degree thermostat or the 170 some degree thermostat?
