Canada Gas leak when tank is full

When I bought my 1996 Avalon XL the mechanic who safetied it said the fuel filler neck is rusty but just paint it and he'll pass it.

I filled up my gas tank yesterday and when it was completely full, gas started to piss out. About half a litre fell on the ground. Would this be a result of the fuel filler neck needing replacement?

i would check the fuel neck and the rubber hose that connects the fuel neck to the tank.but it sounds like your on the right track.

Check the grommet that connects the fuel filler neck to the tank, had a couple vehicles leak from that area.

I have a 96 with 153k on it. I had the same problem with mine. Turned out to be a small pinhole in the fillter neck. Replaced it with a new one and the problem was gone. My rubber connecting hose was still fine but I had to replace the hose for the air vent.
