You will need one of these:

Everything else you need should be included with the Head unit.
Here is a nice guide on replacing it:

That is a very clean looking double DIN...very factory. Having said that, you can get some decent single DIN's for less, from name brands. You can fill the extra DIN space with a pocket...nice for putting your Ipod. I've not seen one with USB though aux in is common.

I bought the Pioneer DEH-11E for about $60. It is rated at 50watts/channel peak and 22watts continuous at 5%THD and 14RMS...vs. 40max/14rms for that Eclipse brand at ?THD (the 14 sounds optimistic based on the max power.) The Pioneer also has a very good tuner (Supertuner IIID) which pulls in stations amazingly well. It was a HUGE upgrade from the factory stereo; cleaner, louder sound, less radio static.

Another name brand, for the same price is the Sony CDX GT340. It is rated 52/17watts/channel at 5%THD and will play MP3s from CDs.

You might not "need" the power, but if you do push the Eclipse it will distort before the Pioneer or Sony and then there is a greater risk of blowing your speakers. Additionally, Pioneer and Sony are known brands with proven reliability.

With the "kit", you will still need to solder wires (kit harness to adapter harness) but at least you don't have to do it in the car...bent down under the dash. Also, it makes it easier to swap stereos in the future (you don't have to cut a second time.) Get yourself some heatshrink tubing to cover the connections.

I bought this wiring kit off Ebay.

and this pocket to cover the DIN slot. Don't worry that it doesn't mention the Avalon. The slot and connection is the same.

You are welcome. A boring looking double DIN will be less likely to be stolen...but I'd almost feel sorry for the guy who would bother stealing the $60 Pioneer. I gotta imagine it would only fetch $10-20 bucks on the street.

It does look stock...which is nice. Getting an auxiliary input was our main impetus to yanking out the stock head unit. Got tired of dealing with cassette adapters and radio transmitters...and the auxiliary sounds way better.
