'98 keyless remote suddenly has NO range.

Well, it's always something. I posted an issue recently where I took my '98 Avalon in to get the rack and pinion replaced and the garage broke my spiral cable. That got resolved, thankfully, but another issue my car came back with is that the range on my keyless remote went from 10-15 feet to 1 foot. I literally have to be standing at the driver-side door with the remote pointing into the window to get it to lock/unlock. I've changed out the battery, taken the remote apart and carefully cleaned it, nothing helps.

Is the remote just dying or is there some other part I should be concerned with? I have a second remote but it's not programmed. (I've tried with no success.)

This isn't a big issue but it is really, really annoying.

It might be a long shot, but are your battery cables tight? I was having remote issues...very short range...when it got the worst, the car didn't want to start. Found the battery connection was corroded and loose. Cleaned and tightened and the remote once again worked it's standard paltry 10-15 ft away.
