My 97 XLS is fairly new to me and unfortunately I have no idea when the tires were last replaced, but I feel like it's about time. I'm not really the best person to be able to judge based on the tread, but I feel like they're on the way out. I've been burning rubber under normal, dry conditions (mostly cornering) when it really shouldn't have been occurring and I've noticed some slight sliding under the same conditions. IM(not qualified)O, if the tires are good they shouldn't be sliding around simple curves at 45mph or burning rubber unless put under extreme pressure.
Maybe my possible need for new tires could be attributing to my suckish gas mileage as well? I've been getting 16.5mpg. My alignment is also off a bit, but I'll get that done when I get new tires.
Anyway, all that being said ... I figure I should look for new tires. A friend recommended the Kuhmo Solus KH16's and I've also found the Continental ContiExtremeContact's just through some research. They're $64/$75/ea respectively.
What're your opinions on those / what tires do you like?
A good way to comparison shop is go to tirerack.com and discounttiredirect.com, plug in your vehicle information, then check out all the tires the two sites have available. Both sites also allow you to select several tires and then compare them together. Very helpful at nailing down the correct tire for you based on your driving type, weather in your area, tire longevity, etc. Give them a whirl.

I have Goodyear Assurance tires on my '98 XLS. I really like them. They're fairly quiet, even on the high way, in comparison to the Kumho Ecsta's on my old car. I take some corners pretty hard and they grip with ease. The roads here in Milwaukee are terrible and these tires seem to handle them just fine. I just did a quick check on tire rack. The assurance's are 97 dollars a pop, a little steep but I know I'll be replacing these with another set of assurance's
As for gas mileage, with 60/40 highway to city miles and driving like maniac at times, I get anywhere from 22 to 25 mpg.

I'd add the Yokohama Avid TRZ because they have really good grip. but they tend to follow the grooves of the road.
I'm REALLY not a fan of the continentals. I've had bad tire wear issues with them.

Don't forget another reason for the online retailers is so you can read reviews made by people who have used those tires. Some reviewers are very good at giving updates after so many miles, priceless info for a shopper.

I just recently put Toyo Versado LX on my 95 XLS, and they are the quietest tire I have ever put on a car. After putting Toyos on an old Honda that was extremely noisy, the dealer told me I would love these tires.
Not sure about the gas mileage, I am having MPG issues due to a bad O2 Sensor that I have on order to replace. Also I have noticed that I changed Gas to non-ethanol and it brought it back up even though the O2 Sensor is bad. The Toyo's are $99, but are well worth my sanity!
