Traction Control Wont Turn OFF

Hey everyone,
I just bought a 98 Avalon and I've been running through the problems I need to fix. I have just about everything done except the suspension and the TCS. My TCS won't turn off. The only thing I can imagine is that the switch is broken. I saw the "TCS OFF" light come on once. No matter how I push the TCS button it just won't turn off. Is there some special way I need to push it in order to turn it off (three short clicks and a long one, a long one and a short one, etc) or what? Has anyone else had this problem?

the "tcs off" light is involved in error codes. some error codes cause the tcs off light to stay on and maybe others cause it to stay off? is the check engine light on?

The check engine light is not on nor is my engine making any strange noises. It does seem plausible that there would be an engine code preventing the TCS from being turned off. I've heard of car computers doing stranger things.
