Continuous Fuse Blowing / Check Engine

Just curious to see if anyone has any troubleshooting/advice for this odd problem, this is on my 97 XLS...

Two days ago the AC fuse blew, which also takes out the clock, outside temperature, and stereo system. Convenient, right? (We reached a record high of 102º yesterday in Richmond, VA!) So, not really a big deal, I get a new fuse and we're good to go.

Today my check engine light comes on a little after I passed 127,000 mi, so I figure it could be a pre-programed alert and write it off in my head for a bit...

...Until I blow the same fuse again. Which I replace. And then blow again 25 minutes later. And then blow again 2hrs later. And when I finally get home for the evening I end up putting in two more just because ... why not ... and it blows them instantly.

I was told that my AC Compressor would need to get replaced "eventually". Maybe this means "eventually" is now? It works great when ... the fuse isn't blown. And has worked fine for the past 2,000/mi.

well, disconnect the wire from the ac clutch and replace the fuse...

ac has nothing to do with check engine - as far as i know?

OK, just to protect you from the issues i had. Check other things ur a/c may be ok. that fuse controls radio/ac/air/heat controlles and the cig lighter!

I had the mis fortune of someone shoveing the wrg fuse in mine and it was the cig light had came loose and shorted out and burned my wiring harnness the cig lighters in these cars are a 2 piece deal that will come apart.

I would start with the a/c plug and if it still blows i would check behind the dash

Pry the center cover off and unhook 4way flasher plug and remove radio and a/c control unit. then u can see the plug to the cig lighter on top of the console. unplug that. and see if it stops.
