well, i just tightened up the top center nut on two brand-new "safety struts" (they come pre-assembled, with all parts new). it shut the front end up, completely. the nuts were only about half-snug!
i had to do the same with the rears. i've never had a complaint about gabriel shocks before. it seems i bought the last one of the safety struts for my 97. now auto-zone says manufacturer is unable to supply... ???
i know there weren't tooooo many avyz sold, due to the rather steep price. so are we seeing an end to parts availability, after only 13 years?

I just finished installing the Gabriel Ready Mount Struts on my son's 99 Avalon. All went well and the road test was fine. Now, after a couple of days, the left front strut has started making a popping noise when the wheels are turned in either direction. It appears that the spring is sticking at the top and then popping when it releases. Is this the noise you are referring to? Were you able to tighten the nut with the strut in place?
my noise was just plain 'ol whacking, caused by the loose nut on the top of a couple pf the struts. i returned the left front and replaced it under the warranty to get rid of the groaning sound. all's fine now
In the realm of shocks/struts, you get what you pay for. I've used gabriel, monroe, and kyb on my own cars and up till moving a few weeks ago for school, worked in a shop doing suspension/alignment work every day and gabriel parts are the lowest quality of the 3 brands. lower grade monroe (matic, some sensatrack. depends on the car too) stink too, upper grades are ok. KYB is better but I still wouldn't put the lowest grade parts on my own cars.

"You don't get to judge me for how I fix what you break"
I just got off the phone with Gabriel technical support. They are having a pair of front struts taken from their warehouse to be inspected by their engineer. Once he's inspected the struts and is satisfied that there are no problems, Gabriel is direct shipping the struts to me. They offered to pay for the labor to install them but it's an easy enough job that I'll do it. They want to replace both the front left and right struts and want them shipped back to inspect them.
I ordered them through AutoZone but Gabriel is taking care of the problem for me. I have to say I am impressed by their customer service. I ordered Gabriel because I wanted a "Ready Mount" strut and I could not find a "Ready Mount" from any of the other manufacturers.
I like a company that is willing to stand behind their products.
hmmm... i, 2, like customer service BUT i find it unlikely, in the extreme, that the gabriel factory just happens to be running avalon "safety struts" at this moment. i've been given to understand they fit nothing else and the demand for them can not be high, relatively speaking
autozone puts a lifetime warranty on those parts so the quality isn't all that important - lol. just get some more.

The Avalon,Camry, Lexus ES300 and Solara of these generations, even as far back as the 93 V6 Camry's share alot of components. I don't think we are going to see a shortage in parts any time soon.
Even the Previa and Tercel share some similar components.
The closest match for part to part is the ES300, Camry and Avalon.
It is always good to make sure all your "pre assembled" parts are snug. I have run into this issue with a few "pre assembled" parts. I have come to the conclusion that not everyone is attention to detail orientated as I am.
I found Monroe sensa-trac quick struts online at Amazon. They are the same strut number as from the Monroe website except they have a "1" in front of the part number to designate them as a quick strut.
Here's the link to the Amazon site for replacement struts and shocks. You will have to put in your vehicle information and look for the Monroe quick struts. Should be part numbers 171678, 171679, 171680, and 171681.
