is there a place i can find specs for the avalons sold in japan? the specs would have to be in english, of course.. lol
i put a jdm engine in it and man, have i got a tiger, by the tail! the thing really hauls. i've driven these cars before and the us engine is a super-wimp, compared to mine!

Depends which year Avalon engine specifications your asking for?
I wasn't aware there was a difference in the power output between Toyota's U.S. and Japanese domestic market engines, so I'd be interested in seeing this too.
To the OP: was this a used or rebuilt JDM engine? I see some places are selling rebuilt units, which, if they don't rebuild to purely stock specs, might affect output. For example, an overbore would increase both displacement and compression ratio and would probably add a few ponies. A non-stock spec camshaft might make a difference too. Of course, a newly rebuilt engine will usually make more power than one with ~150K miles too, so there's that.
Just for the record, the Avalon wasn't sold as the "Avalon" but as the Pronard, and I don't think it was a very hot seller. And all of the Pronard's were built in Kentucky. There still may be some differences in the ECU and other various things (though these are more notable on the M, S, and A series engines), but nothing that will turn your car into the hot rod you described. Honestly, it's most likely the fact that you have a brand new engine vs. the tired old one that was in there.

one thing i noticed is the plastic cover from my old engine does not fit - the spacing of the holes for the "bolts" that hold it on is completely different. but that could simply be another year?
it had individual coils on it - not the three and the skinny plug wires to the rear bank, like my old engine. is that just another year as well? does anyone want some individual coils? i still have them. i have not seen them on a usa car ??
today i put my own secret fuel enhancer in it for the first time. it REALLY took off! i've seen this stuff cause a 20% increase in mileage on five cars, now. one upon a time i thought i would become rich by selling it. nobody believes and nobody will even try it - citing perceived risk to their fuel systems.
i've been through the ringer on this so much that i just use it myself. i will never sell a bottle or tell anyone what it is, 'cause like, i'm really pissed off about the whole thing!
i use greased lightning teflon engine treatment, too. some turkey on here asked me about snake oil... i won't EVEN argue. i have no need to be right and making someone else wrong has no value, to me. you listen, or you don't...
somewhere between the jdm (used) thing, the stuff i do to engines and... whatever, this car really hauls! i drive it like a 60 year old man 99% of the time but when i need it, it sure is there. half throttle will drop it two gears at 70 mph and it will take right off, like a lot of american v-8 cars wish they could!

Actually, I think the US Avalon has pretty decent power. I don't usually do this, but...a couple days ago a guy in an older Cadillac 32V front wheel drive Seville was driving very aggressively and tried to cut me off by passing me on the right side just before the road narrowed to one lane. I nailed it as he came up on my right rear and he couldn't get around me. I think it really humiliated him off that a V6 had just as much guts as his V8; when the road opened up to two lanes again I let him go around me and it looked like he had sunk down low into his seat.
I thought they only sold the second gen in Japan. I know the first gen was designed, built and sold only in America and a slightly different car was sold in Australia. They fill the full-size slot with the Crown in Japan.
Like American Pie said, the first gen Avalons can haul. I have no problem weaving around 3 lanes of traffic in Milwaukee, WI.
You might have a GR engine. The 3 liter engine puts out 250 horsepower. The FE engine puts out close to 200. The 1MZ-FE definitely has some punch. Tons of torque too.

The first generation was also built in the USA and sold in Japan as the Avalon. They had 3.0 and 3.0G grade levels as well as a "Coach Edition" for 98-00.
there's 3 different MZ engines, 1MZ (which is stock, has like 3 gens as i think of it, 1st gen is the 94-96 which uses the individual coilpacks, 2nd gen which is typically 97-99 in our avalons or 97-01 in camrys and 99-03 in solaras, then theres the vvti motor in 2000-04 avalons and 01-06? camrys) then theres a 2mz motor which is sold mainly in japan or australia, which is a 2.5 higher compression and finer tuned motor, but same power as the 3.0 then the 3mz which is a 3.3 motor in 04+ v6 solara, 05-06 camry se v6, 04-06 sienna v6 and es330. take a pic of your block and let us know what it says. it should say 1mz. from the sound of it you got a 1st gen one which had individual coilpacks and just used your regular wiring. only diff between the older ones to newer ones is the spark plug wiring and fuel lines.
you're motor is probably just in good condition compared to others LoL
