I put 5 quarts of Mobil 1 and when I took the meter out (15 minutes after I put in the oil), it was way high (about 6 inches above recommended). Am I supposed to let it settle longer then check the meter?

sounds like you forgot to drain the old oil... 6 inches?

check it tomorrow, before you start it.

I definately drained it. I am certain I drained the correct one too. I mean, what other fluid may look like oil when I drain it?

Trans oil, if its dirty. Check that before you start the car.

The engine oil drain bolt is near the passenger side of the car, when the trans oil is closer to the driver wheel.

Thought: you replaced the filter too, right? Did it leak while doing so? (other than the oil from inside the filter)

Crap that doesn't sound good... The bolt I removed to drain the "oil" was on an angled surface (If looking directly at the passenger door from the outside, it is slanted down from left to right). Does that makes sense? The location of the bolt I removed seemed to be more under the passenger seat than the driver's seat.

I sure hope I drain the wrong type of oil... I didn't pay attention to it when I drained it. but in the drain pan where I drained it to, it looked like dark black. Does that sound like transmission oil or engine?

where did you put the new oil - into the top of the engine, right? under a black oil cap that screws off?

nightmare scenario, here, is if you put the motor oil into the transmission (by removing the dipstick and using a funnel with a small hose at the end)...

maybe you're checking the transmission when you see it's very high? the transmission should be checked when the engine is running.

anyway, the engine oil has a bolt to drain it but the transmission fluid requires a large metric allen wrench.

I know for sure I didn't use a large allen wrench. And yes, I put the new oil on top of the engine under a black cap that said "5w-30..." I for sure didn't need a funnel to put the oil in.

So chances are that I drained the correct oil and I put it in correctly.

It just bothers me how the oil reading was high when I checked it. I will see tomorrow. Like I said, I only put in 5 full quarts of oil.

My 98 Avalon has over 160,000 miles on it. I just changed the oil yesterday and didn't realize I was out of filters until it was too late. Long story short, I didn't change the filter and the oil is still high after I drove it around about a mile.

Guess I should drain a little bit of oil out later. What do you guys think? Can having a little too much oil hurt the engine when pressure and temperature rises in the engine?

I read around other forums and on google, that too much oil is bad for the engine. I will go out in the 110 degree sun and drain it and hope i don't pass out.
