I was rear ended this week

Now I am worried about getting shafted by the insurance adjuster. I like my car and prefer to get it fixed, but I am worried about them just cutting a low check since it is a 99 model plus high miles

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. I was in the same situation back in May. Fortunately the panel beater I went to halved his prices so that I could keep my car without the insurance company writing it off as he knew how much it meant to me. Hopefully you'll be able to find someone like that. Get as many quotes as you can and don't let the insurance company push you around. It's just "another car" to them. Good luck!

The adjuster just left and said ballpark figure my car is 5-6k, and if the total damage is 70% of the value it is totaled.

Even if they decide to total it you still can negotiate the price of leaving the car with you: they'll just subtract the amount they could get from selling the totaled car to a junk yard and pay you remaining amount and car will be yours.
