Knock Sensor

OK, so since i have had the car. the CEL will come on after 3-4 drive cycles it will go off. the code is P0330. So i dont think the sensor is "bad" maybe a loose wire? the knock sensor is $160 which i dont have. any ideas?

The Avalon's have two knock sensors. Have you looked at the wire to make sure it isn't damaged?

If you do do it, save yourself the hassle and get both sensors and the wire. If you PM me your VIN# or tell me what year Avalon, I'll give you the part numbers. I'd offer to sell them to you at a discount, but I am not yet a supporting vendor(that is in the works) and I don't want to violate forum rules. But whether you did/do buy from me or not, take my advice and buy both sensors and the wire. It is a lot of work to do only to go back and have to do it again.

I also have the CEL on on my 96 Avalon with the P0330 code, do anyone have a picture or know where the connector is located? I am talking about the connector that is going to the main harness, not the one that are going to the knock sensors. I can't find it anywhere on the engine compartment.

it's likely to be a "home run" all the way to the ecu, under the glove box. the only connector may well be at the plug for the knock sensor, which DEFINES pita to replace as it's under the intake manifold (NOT the plenum - the actual manifold).

I just got the car inspected 4 months ago. I don't have the $800 right now to replace the sensors. I would like to check the sensors at the other end of the connector before I take it in. I had up to next spring before I have to get it inspected again. By the way, is it ok to drive the car with the CEL on and the P0330 code. The car seems to run nornally except a little lack of power from moving from a complete stop. Otherwise it runs pretty smooth. Will I do any damage to the engine running the car with the P0330 code and the CEL on?

I got the wiring diagram from the Haynes manual, but I just can't locate the EC1 connector on the driver side of the engine. See if you can find yours, please take a picture and post it. I will do the same if I found it. Thanks.

So did anyone find the knock sensor connector on the engine block? I am talking about the mating connector (the EC1 conector) before it goes to the ECU, not the end that goes to the sensors. Any help on locating this connector will be great. Thanks.

sonic2wb and all, if it is the parts schematic that you are talking about, I will get it up on this post on Tuesday baring any unfortunate circumstances like I don't know how to post a picture. It would be in a .PDF format if that makes a difference. So if anyone has a tip on how to do that, I am all ears, worse case scenario I can always resend it to sonic2wb via email.

The knock sensors are an easy fix. They just take time to repalce. I think you need a 24 or 27mm wrench to unscrew it. I can not remember off the top of my head.

You will need to remove the upper intake plenum, fuel rail, injectors, etc.

You will also need to remove a coolant bypass hose to access the knock sensors.

You can grab the knock sensors out of a Camry/Avalon/Solara/Lexus ES300 1MZFE engine from a self serve auto wrecker for a few dollars.

The issue with my knock sensor was that the connector tip had broken off giving intermitant signals.

While you are in there I reccomend you replace the coolant bypass hose with a brand new Toyota OEM one. It will be a nice perfect fit and you have that piece of mind!
