use THESE speakers - they almost fit !!

recently the car favored me by forcing me to buy more (and more, and more, and... ad infinitem). this time the goddam rear speaker blew. i replaced the fronts as i added the stereo. DAMN i'm tired of having to buy schmidt for this thing!

anyhow, i took a whole day and drove over to the place to get speakers, in the USA. i found these - they almost fit!

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...TOKEN=70607723

the rears don't have tweeters. these are full-range woofers - they top out at about 15 Khz. they sound great, IF you know how to phase speakers.

people at car stereo places do not know what i'm about to give you. all they know is wiring diagrams... i'm dead serious - i've had many a stereo installed, over the years, and not ONCE were all 4 speakers phased correctly!

this is how it's done:

connect the first front speaker. solder the leads. turn the fader all the way to the front and the balance to the middle. with the other front speaker facing you and the stereo playing at a decent, but not high volume, connect the speaker, then reverse the leads. as you connect and re-connect, listen to the bass. when it's louder, the speakers are in phase. solder the wires that way.

SOLDER the !@#$%^&*!! wires! gawd, i hate people that half-ass things...

then set the balance all the way to the left. repeat the process above using the left front speaker as reference as you switch the polarity of the left rear speaker. when the bass is loudest, solder the leads.

finally, set the balance to the middle and the fader all the way to the rear. repeat the above, using the left speaker (that you just phased) as a reference as you switch the polarity of the right rear.

this will give you sound you never thought you could get.

say thank you, Monte

I absolutely love parts express! Did that 5" woofer fit in the door with no modifications? I had to add an additional 15mm of diameter to fit my selection.

I fit these

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...umber=264-1078

and these

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=277-114

In my front doors. Bi-amped, also. ( I think i crossed them over around 2700 Hz)
Also, low pass filters, like 30Hz is a must. Even disallowing such a low frequency being reproduced will grant you much more volume and clarity.
Rear doors are Boston Acoustics S45s from crutchfield. which I have to say are some of the best automotive speakers I have ever heard.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_065S45/...45.html?tp=102

Interesting that a 4" speaker didn't fit in what was listed as 4" hole, however silicone is a beautiful thing.
The sound is phenomenal, if only i had a radio, yes.

The Front Doors:

Keep in mind, when checking for phasing, the direction of the speaker is important too. two speakers can be wired correctly, but if one is physically turned 180 degrees around on the same plane, it is out of phase.

The idea is when a voltage is applied to the speakers, that they all move in the same direction (as in, all speakers move away from their magnet or towards it)

no modifications - just a little silicone to fill in the small gaps

Well thats no fun! In addition to silicone, self sticking window foam tape stuff works great too. A little less permanent solution. And is perfect if you're impatient like me!

5.25" speaker DIY

Put 5.25 componets in my 98 XLS (PICS!!!!)

door panels are easy to remove.

Remove the panel with the window switches by lightly prying from the bottom lip, disconnect the wires.

Remove the tweeter panel by popping it off with something flat

Removing teh sail panel (the triangle peice behind the mirror) isn't necessary, but helps.

There are 4 (3?) screws on the bottom part of the panel holding it in.

there are two plastic caps near the door hinge that when remove expose two screws.

There is one or two plastic push pins on the latch side of the door. using something pointy, push in the circular middle. Then the outer shell of the push pin should slip out.

Finally, there are two large screws holding the door in, one is in the area where the window switch sit, and another is behind a little rubber cap in the armrest. Both screws are a brass-ish color.

I think Crutchfield is way better than Parts-Express. Don't get me wrong, Parts-Express is good but Crutchfield has lists of audio parts that will and wont fit your car. I used them when I put new speakers in my Saturn, now that that is my sister's I will use them to put new speakers in my Avy.

And like Jigg said, you need to install your speakers in the right physical AND electrical orientation. I installed my speakers the wrong way in my Saturn and it didn't sound right. I flipped two of them and BAM! Led Zeppelin never sounded better.

removing the door panel is very easy. 2 big screws beneath the round plugs in the door handle. the trim around the door lever pops off when you pull from the front. 2 screws in the bottom then LIFT UP and it comes right away.

I just now looked at the spec sheet, and for those who are curious the hole cutout size is 3.8 inches, so these would fit perfect.

To each their own; Full range may be ok, but I think you if coupled them with a set of tweeters they would be great. As the speakers are going to be questionable t 10Khz, I'm sure. But to each their own- Sound is subjective.
