Unhappy 96 Avalon xls moon roof

I have a 96 Avalon xls, it had about 200,000 miles on it. Yesterday when I closed the moon roof, the moon roof moved almost to the end of closing (about 1/4") just before it came all the way up. It stoped and it will not move either way, the motor just making noises when I push the forward or backward button. I have been looking for information related to the moon roof but so far I can't find it anywhere. Please help.

How do you take the headliner apart, I have a Haynes manual, it didn't even mention anything about the moonroof.

Is there anyway you can manually close the moonroof? I also have a Honda Accord EX. In the middle of the headliner, there is a small plug, I can remove the plug and insert a Hex tool to manually close the moonroof if I can't close it using the moonroof switch. Any idea where the manual control (if any) is on the 96 Avalon? Thanks.

This is possibly helpful news to me. Do you have an owners manual that you can check? If not I can check mine tomorow sometime. Also you could try asking your local dealership if there is any such override on the avalon or camry.

I try to look it up on the manual that came with the car, but the only thing that mentions in the manual is the operation of the moonroof. It does not contain any information about how to close it mannally if you can't close it using the moonroof switch. There must be a way to do that, I can't belevive Toyota will design a moonroof system without a backup.

On some of the 97 Avys, the motor is behind the map light assembly.
If the sliding roof does not operate:
(e) Remove the map light assembly.
(f) Manually operate the sliding roof by inserting a hex
wrench into the motor to turn the drive shaft.

I am going to see if I can take the map light assembly apart and manually close the moonroof using a hex wrench. Wish me luck.

Map light assembly pops right off. the whole plastic part lens/trim. then there will be 2 screws to remove the rest of the lamp assembly.
