Diagnostic Port Doesn't Work

My check engine light is on and I have taken my 97 Avalon to 2 different stores to see if they can read my code. Neither place's code readers could connect with my car. They turned the key on without starting on both occations. Any ideas as to why they can't connect with my car? Thanks, Josh

Try disconnecting the battery, wait a minute or so, and reconnect. other than that, I have no idea!

it's not necessary to turn the key ON. try turning it to ACC. this is the way autozone successfully read my codes, time after time.

Check your fuses. This might be the reason for the CEL.

When ever my code reader fails to read or even power up when plugged into the OBDII port, the OBDII fuse is blown. The Blown fuse will trigger the CEL.

The fuse under the hood was missing. Put a fuse in and had 12V on pin 16 on my connector. Now on to codes P0773 and P0420. Thanks for the help!

that p0773 means the solenoid for the torque converter lockup is bad. that's a B***H! gotta find one first then take the valve body down, 'cause it's on the top side of it! i just did all that...

The 0420 will point to the converter, but is based on the pre cat and post cat O2 sensors reading too close in value. So, one or both of those could possibly be the problem. You really need to be able to read the data stream, not just the code. I use the OBD-2 package with my laptop to read & clear codes, and see the data needed for diagnosis. Very reasonable.

oh yeah - the o420 is quite possibly a leak in the flange on the exhaust pipe between the engine and the rear o2 sensor. just have a muffler shop cut it off and replace it with a solid piece of pipe.
