A/C problem

Hi everyone,
My dad has a 99' Avalon with an A/C problem. The A/C button doesn't stay lit or the A/C doesn't come on when I take off my finger. I have to press down the A/C button to get the light to stay lit and for the A/C to come on. The weird thing is that the A/C light stays lit and the A/C comes on only when I switch over to the windshield function but I can't turn it off when I press on the button. The light stays lit and the A/C stays on. I appreciate any suggestions and answers.

I'm no expert, but it could be the switch.

is it one with the knobs or the push button selections? I would pull it out of the dash and check the plugs and make sure they are secure.

It comes with two turning knobs for the area switching selections. It's just weird that it seems that the A/C button works on the windshield selection but it won't turn off when I press on the button. When I move the knobs to another area, the A/C button turns off and the A/C turns off. I have to press and hold the button in for the light to come on and the A/C to come on.

So, when it is in the winshield direction does the A/C light come on or do you just feel cold air?

The A/C light does come on. I tried to turn if off by pressing the button, but it doesn't. It won't turn off unless if I switch it to another area or turn off the A/C by switching it off completely.

That is a function of the system if u put in on the windshield setting the system automaticly turns on the a/c so that the air dryer will work to help defrost the windows. but You should be able to disengage it. i think its a malfunction in the switch its self. find a junkyard and u can get one for like a few bucks or contact toyotapartsman and he can get you the price on a new one.
