i'm going to be doing my struts one of these weekends soon. as i understand it, i will need to lift both wheels at either end of the car off the ground at the same time. where are the best spots to lift with a floor jack, and where are good spots for the jack stands?

I would use the jack stand on the sides, for maximum stability.

i jack mine from the front ( no pun intended LOL) then place stands on each side on the positions on that diagram

Be sure to place a block of wood or something realitivly soft on top of the jack plate. I always jack the car up and support the car on the side "rails", but from so many repeated time those rails are starting to disform from the cup shape of the jack plate. Maybe its just me, but I dont know. good luck on your struts!
