Defect with Black Paint?

So I have a black Avalon, and when the car was around 4 years old the clear coat around the top of the mirrors and the door handles started peeling off. The car was waxed regularly and taken care of and it always mystified me why ours was doing that so young. It peeled off the door handles in a clear film like material and flaked off the top of the mirrors. The rest of the car was fine and had no peeling of any kind. I've noticed on a lot of Black Gen 1s that the clear coat has peeled off in the same areas, and I've only seen it on MCX10s. I've never seen it on any other Black Toyota. Was there some sort of widespread defect with the black paint used on the Avalons at the time? Bad paint adhesion on the plastic door handles and mirrors?

Mine has been peeling on the mirrors, door handles, and the trim around the plate on the back(seems like the edges of the front bumper are peeling too). I'm trying to save up to have the whole thing repainted, since I've got some rust repair and dings to fix as well(living near a public golf course sucks).
