abs code 39

Hey guys, could use some help. Just got a lot of bad news. first, they tell me my cancer is back in my tongue, jaw, and oral area (oropharynx). Nothing they can do. The stupid bastards midsdiagnosed me again. Pet scan in april showed uptake in tongue. Ear, nose, and throat guy did all of a one minute inspection of my tongue and mouth before reaching for this scope that goes down your nostril -the procedure that generates the bigger bucks. Can hardly talk now- at least I got morphine!

Anyhow, about a month ago, abs light came on, then went off. Did the same thing yesterday for about 5 minutes and today for about 20 minutes while on way to toyota dealer. When I came back out and restarted car, the abs light was off and stayed off. I had a code 39 a month ago and forgot all about it. Same code today. Haynes says "Code 39- open circuit-left rear speed sensor or circuit."
*Check the speed sensor, wire harness, and electrical connector.

What a pain when you are weak. Got jack under center thing in center of back of car and managed to get car up in air. Blocked both front tires front and back. jack stand under drivers rear (left rear) brake part or suspension part.
Could see NO obvious damage to wiring.
Took out abs sensor (one 10 mm bolt), wiggled it out, cleaned with crc electrical cleaner, wiped clean including tip with lint free scott shop towels.
I forgot to blow some air into the bore or any sort of cleaner though.
I took off 2 brackets with 10 mm bolts and inspected for chafing, etc.
Put brackets back on. Made sure all bolts tight.

Question* To the left of the left rear strut, the abs sensor harness assembly disappers into a grommet. I pried the grommet out where it attaches to the left rear fender well, but all I saw was more abs harness wire. I know from looking at pics of abs sensors that they have a long electrical harness. Anybody got any idea how to access this sensor connector?
Do I take off the felt liner on the left hand side of the trunk?
Or do I take out the back seat?
Anybody ever do a left rear abs speed sensor assembly with harness?

Toyota wants $400 to do it with obviously oem abs sensor ($215). 1.5 hours of work at $100 an hour. I'm getting ready to sell car and don't know if I could trust a cheaper sensor like at rock auto (dorman, etc.). The abs light coming out will kill the sale. Like to get it fixed for new owner.
Any advice appreciated! Michael

Sorry to hear about the bad luck man.

To access the rear speed sensor connector you need to remove your back seats. You will need to remove the bench seat fiirst. It is clipped in at the front of the seat (facing the floor boards), just pull up with some might.

Then you will need to remove the seat back. They are 12 and 14 mm bolts I believe to take out the seat back bolts. Once those are out of the way, you can remove the seat back. When the seat back is out you will spot the electrical connectors. They will be closest to the "outside of the body". They tie into the main harness that runs along the side.

A tip to put the bench seat back in, is when you are ready to clip the bench seat in, run the seat belts through the seatbelt holes and connect them to the seatbelt connectors. When you fasten the seat in place, you just need to pull up on the seat belts and the seatbelt connectors will come up. That will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

Got Boost: Thanks a lot bro, for riding to the rescue and telling me how to get that damn thing out of there. I would have thought the trunk. That must be a long abs sensor assy. harness. I figured once I took out that grommet, there would be lots of slack, and I could pull the abs sensor harness assembly towards me, and unclip the connection. I was gonna take apart the connection and take CRC electrical cleaner and try cleaning it. If it codes again, I will just go for a new OEM abs speed sensor assy. I doubt very much there is an open circuit from the other end of the connector (the hidden end ) and the ABS ECU. Thanks, again!

My pleasure man.

The sensors can be a little finiky, especially if there was some suspension work done and the connectors were not dissconnected or slack given in the line. All it takes is a little tug and a wire can be compromised triggering a code.

Toyota is pretty efficient or should I say tight with making sure there is just the exact amount of wire needed for the part. LOL.

The seatbelt trick I learned over time. That one is a sanity saver!

Any other questions let me know!
