95 Avalon XL Amp Adjustment

I am preparing to install new speakers in the front of my 95 Avy XL and noticed from the day I bought it that the sound is really distorted in all of the speakers, especially when it comes to bass. It sounds like someone is pounding a drum, rather than bass. Either way, I have always dismissed it and just worked with it, but no music truly sounds right in my car when there is bass involved. I have been reading about the amp that is located behind the glove compartment and I'm curious, is there any way to adjust it or anything like that? I'm definitely NOT experienced with this at all, but I would like to know if that may be my issue.

When I first bought the Avy, it had a Sony 10-disc changer in the trunk and RCA wiring coming into the changer. I don't really know if the previous owner messed with anything, amp or else. But the bass sounds like hell and I figured I'd ask before I start diving into this time-consuming escapade.

If it's still using the factory amp, it's non adjustable, only 2 plugs on a silver box(one to head unit, one to speakers), I'd check the sub in the back, it may be a torn cone or blown driver if it sounds that terrible. Then again, the problem may be deeper if the previous owner rewired the speakers...
