rear personal lights

Hey I have a 99 avalon xls, and I changed pretty much everything inside to leds except that I saw there were some lights in the rear on the B pillars. I checked my owners manual and toyota calls them "rear personal lights", but it does not list a bulb type for replacement ? I cant even seem to get the cover off to get to the bulb, lol. I am wondering does anybody know about these or how to get them off.

Its called rear personal lights in the pillars for the back seats. I would appreciate any help, thank you

I have never changed them. I would assume the covers pop off like the interior dome light or the light in the trunk for which I have changed the bulbs on. I was only able to go to the Toyota dealership to get the replacement bulbs. The trunk light looks like a fuse. The parts man told me it was the same bulb as in the vanity lights.

I would look carefully around the cover, there may be a slot on one side to get a thin screwdriver or knife blade behind to start to pry the cover off.

My lights only turn on when the switch is activated. 98 XLS.

I am wondering also, to this day I have been trying to find the bulb type.
Anybody know how to definitely remove them? trying not to break every clip in the car.

I dont think there is a part in my car that is not missing one clip or one screw.

I will make the effort to remove my rear personal lights tomorrow, and even shoot a video if its anything more than expected.

Does you car make rattle noises like a tin can, aside from the suspensions woes. It makes my car feel so cheap. I haven't destroyed everything in this car yet, but do you experience this annoying shit also. For the time being, I just crank up my 12 year old sound system, which is a little more pleasing to hear.

First step: Clean your car!




Survey your prey.




you want to pry lightly from the TOP and BOTTOM halfs of the light, not from the left like I'm playing around.




Before you go yanking the light out anymore, you have to disconnect the wire harness. For those who care, like me (rabid for dem leds) red is +12, white/black stripe is ground. The switch interupts the +12, which is different from the other dome lights. The switched lead then goes to the BASE of the bulb, not the TIP.




This is why you cleaned your car. If you did poorly like me, then these little retention clips went shooting out of the fixture when it released from the head liner. they're a lot easier to find ina clean car There are three of them.




You can see where the little spring clips get reinstalled, one is installed on the right portion, when the left remains empty.




Beginning disassembly, there are two screws that need to be removed #2 phillips works fine.




There are two of these little tabs that need to be released in order for the module to come free. Take good care in not snapping them!




The back will now remove from the face.




This should contain all the information you need for a new bulb.




Also from my memory these are the same bulb from the front map lights, Stanley 12V, 8W.

Re-installation is the process reversed, not too difficult at all. I hope this helps you.

what led bulb did you replace the bulb with?

Well, theres still a gaping hole where the light used to be as I've never gotten around to finishing that project. I'm simply preoccupied with other projects currently, all involving leds, haha.

I'd most likely use a 1W white "star" led. along side with a RGB led for extra coolness. (to aid:

My list of ongoing projects, in possible order is

sequential turn signals
basement led lighting (with microprocessors!)
then this little dome light thing.
