p0301

while driving on the highway today i noticed a slight stumble/shake, followed by a short CEL flash then it stayed solid... i got scanned at autozone and popped a p0301 i searched the site and found
99 avalon misfire MIL etc help

seeing as its only one cylinder it'll probly be a plug or a wire? i searched for the right plugs on the site, and was wondering has anybody tried e3 diamond fires on an avy? also should i stop driving it till its fixed or jus don't punch it as much? i drove about 8 miles after it happened, seems to not re occur(im worried about my baby girl) lol

P0301 means cylinder 1 where is the most left front one on the engine. To describe the coil, about 2 inches slightly rounded square black one with two wires one wire is thick, other is consist of more than 3 think wires.
I think the first coil has problem. It keeps shaking and flashing CEL right, you gotta change coil no 1.
When check engine light flashes, it means something serious problem in the car.
I also changed the coil because I got p0301, and p0304.

There are 3 coil in the engine.
Coil 1 ignites cylinder 1,and 4, coil 2 for 2,5 , and coil 3 for 3,6.

You can notice there are only 3 thick wires because cylinder 1,2,and 3 directly ignite spark plug by coil but 4,5,and 6 indirectly ignite spark plugs by spark-plug-wires.
So if you got p0301, 0304 = it means no matter what you gotta change coil1. Understand?

p0301, p0304 = ignition coil 1
p0302, p0305 = ignition coil 2
p0303, p0306 = ignition coil 3

For example, if you got p0301 or p0304 error code by ODBII scanner, you have to check coil or distribution spark-plug-wire from coil 1 to cylinder 4.
The other codes are exactly same. I think you already understand.

Before you change the coil, I hope you also check spark plug. One my best friend worked in a car repair shop and he charged my just $80 with labor charge because I changed the coil by myself.
The coil is sold on the internet. It's around $45 ~70 with shipping. You gotta check and order it.

Make sure before you order the part. You gotta check the CEL flashes again or just steady.
Steady CEL means it just happened several times but now it seems OK. So CEL won't flash. However, the coil still has potential of problem.
So you gotta make sure.
I changed the coil March 2010. It was very easy. Just take out some screws or bolt on the coil, snap cables.
If you want to check spark plug, you need 3/8 drive 16mm long spark plug socket and wrench. Don't use a lot of power to take out and put in for spark plugs because spark plugs are made both metal and ceramic.
If you use too much power it will break the spark plugs and the dust and broken pieces will go into cylinder which will seriously mess up your engine.
You should always tender like touching women. If you spark plug is wet, you gotta also change spark plug. The part no of spark plug is denso PK20TR11.
Anyway. If you don't want to buy spark plug deep socket, just buy the coil. It's your call.
I have a plan to maintain my car soon which has driven more than 260,000. I love the car and still have affection. I hope you can inexpensively fix it.

Here is the picture of coil.

It's around $55+shipping. Total around $60

Here is wiring kit

NGK Part # 7783

$33.79

All these parts are around $90 include shipping.

If it is a 95, there is a separate coil per cylinder, troubleshooting it should be as simple as switching the coil between cylinders, and seeing if the CEL code changes

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...umber=PK20TR11

will those work? the light flashed a few times and it shook on idle and accelerating up to aroun 30ish, since its only one cylinder should i just change the plugs, or do the coil too jus to be on the safe side?

Systematic, I would use these plugs. They are about half the price. I see they are not available at my local Autozone, but I would imagine they would be available at another local store. Also, they are cheaper at Autozone than at Rock Auto.

cylinder numbering for toyota 1MZ-FE(V6)

passenger side firewall
------------------------
wire1,2,3

123
456

coil1,2,3
------------
car front

Three days ago, I also changed all the spark plugs and yesterday I changed thermostat.
So I think this numbering is sure for your question.

lol i misread the earlier post n thought 123 was toward the front of the car lol did u use any special tools to get the rear ones(fire wall)? i have a standard 3/8 ratchet and ext, and a stubby 3/8 ratchet and 5/8 socket with the plug holder(which i love lol)

Special tools? I used the ratchet and 3/8 drive 6inches extention with 5/8(16mm) deep socket which has rubber holder in the socket. If you want the secure the spark plugs, you should use spark plug glue(grease). It is around $3~5 in autozone, advanceautoparts, or pepboy. I think you may also need the 3/8 drive universal joint for the ratchet. You may find in the stores around $5. It will reduce your paint to change park plugs near the firewall. I did it without the universal joint. But it was so picky. After changing all spark plugs, and thermostat, my car is easy to rev up in cold weather and the engine also keep temperature in the middle of the gauge in the cluster. Now I have one or two more problems which are the drive shaft(CV-SHAFT). It leaks grease in outter boots in the CV joint. I will buy boot kits instead of remanufactured CV shaft. Only changing boot and grease are much cheaper than replace whole thing. $10 vs $55. I have lots of time to do because I am in vacation. I hope you could do everything yourself. If you have more question don't hesitate. I will reply as fast as I can. I still love my old 97 toyota avalon. It is very silent and runs well around 80mph. That's enough for me.

Good luck and happy new year!

What parts have you change so far?
1 plug ? in the cylinder 1? then what did you change? did you change the wire from coil 1 -> cylinder 1? If you didn't change the wire, now you only have to suspect the spark wires. By the way, where do you live?
