It saying one of the stop/tail/side markers are burn out. Also, check the 3rd stop light.

It means your nitrous oxide system is ready to go! Once that baby hits 88mph you're going to see some... burnt out tail lights.

Yeah, what pmesfun said, its a taillight malfunction indicator, fancy talk for you have a funky bulb in your tail lights. I believe mine went on with a reverse light, that was a tricky. one.

I'd just pick up four 1157 lights, and four 1156 lights, and replace them all. Even at a NAPA that wouldn't go over $10. Beats replacing one faulty bulb, then having another bulb fail in a month.

I think the CHMSL (the third brake light) is the 921 bulb, also 99 cents.

~To remove the tail lights~

Pop open the trunk lid.

There are two 10mm bolts on the tail light which the trunk lid covers, remove them.

Then with sort of a bumping motion, bump the lamp with your palm towards the side of the car. theres a little diagram showing whats up on the lamp fixture.

Once removed, the sockets simply twist out. All the sockets are similar size, I recommend removing one at a time.

It is clearly your 3rd brake light, CHMSL then. The warning bulb will only come on if the suspect bulb is used. Either that or you have some cruddy wire harness/socket connections. But change the CHMSL bulb and I'm sure your problem will go away!

I See a LOT of times if the light comes on with the CHMSL(when you put your foot on the brake pedal) then you've got the wrong watt bulb in there. There are a few different bulbs that look right but use a different wattage. They draw the wrong amount of current and trip the light.

Just make sure you get the correct bulb for that location. 1st Gen Avy's are notoriously picky about them.

Just came across this thread. I have a 95 Avalon and occasionally get this same warning light. The light will come on, stay on for a couple of days and then go off. It may not come on again for several months. I've checked the bulbs and they are good. I need some help trying to figure this out. I'm thinking it may be a bad brake light switch. Anyone have any ideas? How do I test the switch to determine if it is the problem?

Also, I have a problem with my shift lock system. I have to use the override in the steering column to shift from park. Could these two be related?

Thanks in advance!

if so it would seem that the problem with the light would occur alongside the stuck shifter, and not at other times?

I have 3 issues:

1) will not shift from park unless I use the shift lock override
2) no brake lights (intermittent issue)
3) cruise control will not disengage when I press the brake pedal. I have to turn the cruise off and then apply brakes to slow down or stop. If I don't turn it off the cruise control will try to accelerate the car to maintain set speed when I apply the brakes.

I went thru my Haynes book and from what I can tell the brake switch is a part in all 3 systems (brakes, cruise control & shift lock). That's why I thought it may be the issue.
