Hood struts

Hey, Mine are shot on my 1999 xls. I have to use a 2x4 to keep it up or the #$!@ thing falls on my head when I'm working on anything. Has anyone every replaced these things and where do they sell them the cheapest? I've got over 160k on the ride now, so I don't care if they're not OEMs. Any ideas appreciated...

OEM ones are about $50-60 each. On rockauto there are ones from $15-22 each.

Yeah, mine are inconsistent too, depends on the weather if they decide to hold the hood or not. I wind up using a snow brush- A much cheaper solution

I know NAPA sells them; any auto-parts store will have those struts as they are universal in design. pmesfun is right, they typically are under 20 dollars each, depending on length.

Also in order to remove the strut there is a metal clip on each "ball end" which holds it to the stud. pop that out with a small screw driver and with a small bump, should free itself from the stud.

cost of materials sounds very reasonable, but is it difficult to do?

never done them myself, but it looks very easy. Hell, if you can change your oil, this should be a breeze.
