Automatic Headlights

97 Avy auto headlights wouldn't shut off after door was closed. Didn't notice till battery was dead. Charged battery, found that inside courtesy lights worked fine, but hdlts weren't shutting off. Read it could be as simple as headlight relay in engine comp't fuse box.

Bought new relay from NAPA for $20 and hdlts shut off correctly. Checked old relay vs new one with meter and read old one was still good. Put old relay back in and hdlts working correctly-maybe it was a bad connection? (picture of relay)

Anyways, the relay doesn't just pull out. Don't know if Toyota has special tool to spread tabs, but I used 2 small screwdrivers. Tabs are easier to get at if you pull the green Bosch relay out(no locks, but hard to pull)

Was hoping to avoid getting into integration relay and under dash control switch and lucked out.

does the drives side door sensor function correctly? Like turn off the dome light when the door is closed?

The headlights are now working correctly, after removing and reinstalling the hd relay. Originally, the hdlts were staying on (after exiting and closing driver's side door), but the inside courtesy lights were shutting off like they should have(dome lt included)

Sounds like the factory integration relay located right next to the fuse panel under the steering wheel. The green module, that is.

When mine failed (caught fire, yay) I didn't have any automated lighting functions.
