Transmission Bang and Grinding

My parents have a 96 avalon with well over 200k on it. The car has been a great car until this past weekend. My father went to shift it into reverse and there was a loud bang. If you try to put it into any gear there is then a loud rattling noise from inside the transmission.

The car starts fine and there is a slight noise when its in park. You can shift the gear shifter to any gear and then there is a louder almost dragging noise or rattle coming from inside. The car won't move in any gear.

I am just curious if anyone has an idea of what has happened? I am probably going to go get a used transmission to throw in there. I am asking mainly for the knowledge, so please don't bother with the "take it to a mechanic, or its not worth fixing comments." I have rebuilt many engines and have been restoring classic cars for over 15 years, so I am not a novice mechanic. I just have never had to rebuild a modern transmission, so curious to what could have failed or broke? I'm also asking in case it is something work trying to repair.

Well up to the grinding ad failing to move part I would say its a transmission mount, that would cause the loud clunk from shifting gears, along with a gritty feeling ride.

I had the clunk from shifting gears, however I noticed the top dog-bone mount on th engine was shot, replaced that and the clunk quieted pretty good.

Though this is all in vain, because t sounds like you have a pretty serious problem, and sound like a more skilled mechanic than I.

Silly question at this point, but hows the fluid?

And I suppose some silly speculation, but does your speedometer move when you try to drive it in gear? Maybe its a problem with the toque converter or clucth with the parking pin stuck, or maybe a CV joint popped out of the transaxel. I actually like that last one, if one CV managed to pop out (or u joint blew) then the diff would divert most of he power to that shaft, allowing it to get its grind on.

I'm running into a very similar issue.. I have to inspect the tranny mount when I get the car back.

So, what was wrong with your car? Transmission (differential) or only CV joints?

I have the same problem (loud grinding, and car won't go) in Camry: [gen3] Grinding noise from A/T (car won't go).

I have that same clunk going to Reverse from Drive. Doesn't bother me that much, its not that bad.

The griding sounds internal, before the tranny when out in the voyager it made all sorts of noises.
