Timing Belt Life

Opinion question...got a 96 with 175k on it and I assumed that the timing belt life was about 90k hence getting about time to possibly look at changing it but when I went to the maint schedule it was very unclear about when to change it (says 60k if you have special conditions which I don't) so I'm curiuos when people are changing the belt and maybe even who's had it break...

It was 60,000 until Toyota reformulated the belt material at the end of 1998. The new belt recommended change interval increased to 90,000. If you have the original belt then I would change it.

Does that mean that if the belt has been changed since 98 it's the 90k belt? Anyone know of a DIY thread on it?

pmsfun just did a timing belt change around Christmas. If you check out his threat, there is a link where he posted lots of pictures and questions in the Camry forum which I found helpful. It's not quite a DIY, but it is pretty informative. I would contact him if you have any questions.

+1 Do a search of the Camry forums or ask pmsfun directly.

100,000 intervals for timing belt change is ok. Complete job includes cam and crank seals, idler bearings #! and#2, tensioner, and water pump. DIY depends on your mechanical skill level, and what tools you have. Low skill and few tools-better not try.
