ABS comes on after almost complete stop

I have a 97 and it's started doing this intermittently.

Come to what is almost a complete low speed stop (like at the end of a driveway or going into a parking space) the ABS comes on and the car rolls a bit. Car will stop but the pedal goes to the floor.

Anybody run into this before?

There could be any number of reasons why your brake pedal goes to the floor. The bottom line is that you really need to get a good diagnosis of the problem. Call around to local brake & muffler shops (like Midas, Mineke, etc.) and see if they offer no-cost brake checks.

Not to dis the fine members of this forum, but you're going to get a whole lot of ideas of what the problem is if you try to diagnose this problem via the forum. I might be cheaper to have it fixed for you than for you to do the 'R&R' (remove and replace) method of diagnosing.

Don't scrimp on brakes!

Take the car to a brake specialist, dealer or an import shop.

Seems like you have air in your system or the abs pump is failing.

A faulty wheel speed sensor can cause this too. Best to get it diagnosed before throwing parts at it. In this case, they're all expensive.

I pulled the ABS fuse back in the spring and the brakes work fine without ABS. Just cleaned the sensors up. There were bits of rust and crap on the tip of each one. Reconnected the ABS and still have the same problem with the ABS letting the car slide when coming to a slow speed stop. Panic stops from every speed with the ABS work like a champ. Car stops fast and straight.

Anybody have any other ideas? Expensive diagnosis and repair will cost more than the car is worth.

Read post #6. Take it to heart.

Take car to shop with equipment to determine which sensor is dropping out. Some brake chains may do for free in preparing a repair estimate.

i'd really love to disable the abs - PERMANENTLY!

the traction control is bent on killing me by shutting the engine down, just when i need it...

will pulling the abs fuse accomplish this?

hehe, I don't have traction control.

Isn't there a button you can press to disable?

"i'd really love to disable the abs - PERMANENTLY!"

if you want to experiment, the abs fuse is located in the long fuse box on the fender in front of the air cleaner. the fuse is secured from below with screws through each conductor so you have to take the fuse box apart to remove the fuse. the fuse will not just "pull out" but taking the box apart is pretty obvious. one 10mm bolt and a couple of snap on plastic covers. the abs light will come on after you do this.
