I'm installing a Pioneer Avic Nav. head unit in a 96' Avy. However I can't locate the reverse wire behind the kick panel. I've installed two of these on Camry wagons, one a 5S-FE engine, and the other a 1MZ-FE. The wire was the same color (red w/black stripe) in the same spot for both, but the Avy panel seems slightly altered. Any idea on the location and color would be greatly appreciated.
I'm pretty sure it is red with a black stripe. (red and green stripe lead to the switch) And the connection(IP3) is somewhere behind the glove-box, and also routes though the driver side kick panel in another connector (IJ1). Still Red with black stripe.
I assume its for a backup camera?

You know I actually made the connection to the red w/black stripe at the driver's side kick panel (IJ1). When my blinkers didn't work made me think maybe was wrong. So I'll disconnect to see if it's a fix.
Technically it's for the backup camera, but since I don't have one yet I may just try grounding to simplify install.

Oops! Realized that I hadn't put the dash panel on with the hazard plug during my test drive. Didn't run into this with the Camrys because of the different dash trim.
The red with black stripe wire behind the kick panel is the reverse.
You don't even need to connect the reverse wire at all as far as i know(it'll probably save you time later on if you add a camera though). The only non-radio harness wire that was required on my avic f-700 was the parking brake(which I bypassed because setting your parking brake to type in a GPS address is just ridiculous, especially in a A/T)

Hey thanks,
Although it's not needed at this point, I decided to just leave it connected for when I eventually get the camera.
But I did bypass the parking brake connection for the same exact reason.
Hello, I have a '99 Avalon XL column shift model and I'm also trying to find the reverse light wire. I saw 3 Red with a Black stripe wires behind the drivers side kick panel, and using a volt meter determined none of them had voltage only in reverse. I even checked the couple Red with a Black stripe wires I found behind the passenger kick panel with the same result.
It was mentioned earlier that the wire could also be found behind the glove box. What does connector IP3 look like?
You know after I found the wire I realized it really wasn't necessary unless I was installing the back-up camera. I'll check and get back to you on it today. Yes it is located behind the driver's side kick panel.

Thanks but I just got it done. I found a much more detailed wiring diagram than the one that comes in the Haynes repair manual, and looked for the previously mentioned IJ1 and IP3 connectors. It was for a '99 Camry instead of an Avalon, but since the Haynes manual covered both models I thought I'd give it a look. It didn't show an IP3 connector, and it showed the IJ1 connector as the one behind the glovebox. It also stated it was under the blower motor, so I took a look and sure enough, there are three connectors under it (which I hadn't noticed) and the middle one had the Red with a Black stripe wire for the backup lights. I tapped it and all's well.
So thanks for turning me on to the connector IDs, I wouldn't have found it without them!
Yep, the red with black stripe wire. I used the one behind the kick panel on the blue plug, next to the gray plug, just below the hood latch.
Yeah tapping into the wires works better than using the clip-wire that comes with the new units. I found out the hard way when I used the clip-wire on my vehicle speed sensor wire and my cruise wouldn't work. Figured that this interupted the pulse needed to the cruise so I removed it, tapped it and voila! I grounded the mute wire to the chasis and bypassed the unit with the testmode method.
