I need to replace the valve cover gaskets on my '95 Avalon 1MZFE. I read in one of the posts that someone recommended putting brake fluid into the oil to swell the seals. Have anyone heard of this before? Will it have any adverse effects on my engine which has 216,000 miles and is running strong?

I would just go ahead and replace the gaskets with that many miles. The rear can be difficult, but is doable. The intake plenum and wiring harness should be hardest part.

the brake fluid will not hurt anything. you might try it...

My granddad told how he used to put brake fluid (about a tablespoon) into a power steering pump to stop a leak. I tried it on a Mustang and it took care of the leak - never had to put another drop in for the rest of the time I owned it.

But, having said that, it's more likely to swell up O-rings or rubber seals. Not sure what material is used for the valve cover gaskets. Wouldn't hurt, might help.
