'98 or '99 rear strut mounts and struts in a '96?

I see the '96 rear strut mounts were changed with the later 1st gens.

I am wondering it the newer design strut/mount are improved in the design and function...... and if so.... can you change over to the new mount style fairly easy? The earlier mounts knock and rattle fairly early in the life of the car.

I'm making an assumption the place where the mount bolts on the car body is the same on '98 and '99 as the earlier ones. With that assumption..... if the mount is different..... I would assume the top of the strut might be a little different..... and it might be possible to change over to the newer design if you change both out at one time...

Anyone tried this?

Haven't tried this myself, but as the proud owner of a 98, I can tell you I have the same problems with the strut mounts as you do. Sorry.
