tranny park switch

Hi, got a 1999 Avalon, auto tranny, it will not start unless you move the shifter down then back to park a couple times. Before I start taking things apart, some help on where the park switch is and does this sound like the problem.
Thanks,
Rich

not knowing for certain, i would wager this function is built into the huge light switch atop the transmission that runs the lighted gear indicator on the instrument panel. you see these lights when you shift out of drive 'cause the one for drive is usually burned out

if so, i don't think it will be cheap... you might check the alignment, first. it may not be going all the way up into the park position. there is a slot on the shifter cable...

the neutral switch is located on the front side of the transmission.

try to see if you can start it in Neutral without having to move the shifter back and forth.....That will help you identify if the cables need adjusted to replaced or if the switch is going bad.

starting issues

Thanks all for the info!
I reset the shifter cable and the Park/Neutral switch, got info from Haynes manual.
The 99 Avalon still has an intermittent starting problem.
I started it, then turned it off, tried to start it again without touching the shifter and it would not start without moving the shifter and trying again.
I tied this in both park and neutral positions.
Could it be the ignition switch?

Thanks!
Rich

Put in a new park/neutral switch. adjusted per Haynes manual.
still not starting all the time.
Could it be the ignition switch?
Thanks,
Rich
