USA 95 Avi with Check Engine light and flashing O/D OFF light

I just bought this Avi with 230k on the clock, Check Engine light on and O/D OFF light flashing. My buddy has an OBD I reader that I'm going to have him use on it tomorrow, but is there a most likely cause for this condition? The car runs and drives fine. Seems to shift from P to R or D a little hard, but goes under its own power fine.

I have an OBD II code reader. There's no OBD II port under the dash, just a gray, almost circular diagnostic port and a rectangular one on the engine.

OK, you were right. So what does a P0773, besides a shift solenoid malfunction, mean to me? A transmission? If it isn't an open or shorted wire to the solenoid, can they be changed outside the tranny?
