I have an interesting noise in my 99 Avy XLS. It is coming from behind the center console HVAC controls right above the ash tray. It lasts less than a second when I turn the key into the Accessory position. Sounds like errrr... All of my HVAC controls and dampers work fine. Any idea what is causing this noise? I lifted the hood and you can't hear it from the engine side of the firewall.
Stop laughing at an old man. I just did a google and now know what a Head Unit is! Yes, it is original. The sound does remind me of a tape deck winding. I never used the tape deck but I guess it works. Mine is the Platinum Edition with a single CD changer in the dash and the dealer added a 6 disc changer mounted in the trunk which stopped working several years ago. I think you are on to something.
Just popped in a tape and she plays beautifully. I am almost certain the momentary "errr" is the tape player. Now, why is it happening and how can I stop it?

I'm not sure, last time I used a tape player was on my first car: 96 Voyager. Do this...make sure the head unit is off, then turn it to ACC. Does it make the noise? I know there are tape deck cleaners, but do a google search for more info.
I still have my original head unit. Looks like this.
Maybe the original head unit wants to retire, and its time for a new one?
My Head Unit looks just like yours except much bigger. Seriously, I have solved the problem. My battery was completely discharged for several days because I left the key on while I was replacing a fuel injector. Had to get a new battery on Saturday.
I pushed the CD eject button (upper left in your picture) and got the exact same sound. Pushed the button a couple more times and it stopped. I guess the CD player was just trying to index or otherwise recover from the ignition key being on with a dead battery.
Thanks alot for your help. I really appreciate it.
btw, what do you mean by bigger? more buttons? Mine is a double-din.
And an off-topic question, does you avy have a loose steering wheel? I can move the wheel in a couple degrees both ways and still be going straight. The handling on my car sucks as well, but I'm sure that's the sway bar links up front. If that doesn't solve it, lowering springs and tokico struts here I come.

"Bigger" is just one of my bad jokes.
My steering wheel is tight, or at least it seems just as tight as it was when it was new. Of course, it is hard to compare. You might drive my car and say it feels just as loose as your car does. The suspension on my car improved dramatically when I installed new KYB struts a couple years ago.

True, maybe not having an alignment for the past 6 years might have something to do with it. I am just comparing to our other cars. I installed KYB rear struts 3 months ago, the front end is the problem, everything feels loose. They front end is KYB as well but about 2-3 years old. I think either the struts or mounts is defective because I hear banging and clunking noises over any bump, and the steering wheel will jerk over big holes.
