code 1135 problem

Check engine light came on - code 1135. O2 sensor frozen in manifold. Dealer wants $2000 to replace manifold and sensor. Tried wd-40 etc. and was told can't use heat because too close to power steering hose. Anyone have alternatives to replacing manifold? Thanks

P1135: The heater in the sensor is drawing too much or too little current for 1996 models

Without a pic on what your exhaust manifold looks like I'd say you DON'T need a new manifold. Maybe replace the gasket which costs 10-15 bucks at a parts house. The O2 sensor is what your true problem is. Replacing that yourself will cost 150 bucks for the sensor and an hr (take or give pending on your skill level) or so of your time. Use PB Blaster and a impact drill or torque wrench whatever can fit to break it loose. you might need to continuously hit it with PB Blaster to help break it out of there if it becomes stubborn.

The main point I guess I am trying to say is....don't pay that $2,000 when all it would cost you is $200 doing it yourself.

usually the sensor will mess up the threads in the manifold if its stuck. i have had some luck using a tap to clean up the threads. i have also replaced a few manifolds as well. you could also remove the manifold and cut off the o2 sensor bung and weld on a new one.

removing the manifold is not that hard. get 1 from a junkyard. be sure to tap the threads for the exhaust studs and buy new ones before you put it back on. just double-nut the studs - they should come right out.

the gaskets are mighty strange. but they must work - lol. torque from the inside, moving out.

All great ideas that can be utilized all by just doing it yourself. All these ideas mentioned would still be under $300 compared to that mechanic cost of $2000 take or give.
