Weird sound on turning wheels

Note this is a very old old problem.

Ok so, my wife had this car (i have been driving it since we got married, so 4 , almost 5 years now) and back when we were dating she drove it one day, and it started making weird sound like ( a screeching, can't really described it) when turning wheels either left or right, either driving or parked. Next time we were together I checked it and, transmission fluid was on low, or nothing at all ....I don't really remember this was like 5-6 years ago, so I told her tell your dad to check the car from time to time, and added enough fluid.

Now ever since then (that was again about 6 years ago, at about 120-130k miles) it has been making that sound.

Last time I had it in a friend's shop (for either sway bar or drive axle, don't remember, as it was about 3-4 years ago) he said the fluid should be changed or that he did change it and it should be done 3-5 times and sound should stop. It's almost 100k miles now, and I was thinking that tranny fluid needs to be replaced, as well as cleaned and sealed as i can see a bit of leak from the tranny tank, so I guess the gasket is bad on it.

Question is, could just replacing the fluid stop that sound or????

Only does it when turning the wheels it's like a wheinnnnngg , can't really explain it, kinda deep sound but not knocking sound... and it does it the same way when it's parked or when you drive now matter how fast or slow, at about the same intensity.

Car is at almost 240k now, so it has had this sound for about 100k.

Also, as I really need to, replace head gasket and seal for the both oil and trany tanks, aas they are visibly leaking.... are these two jobs a PITA and will they take more than a weekend?

steering and transmission are not related...

you probably have a loose belt on the power steering pump.

go to parts store and buy a thing that has a big blub on it and can be used to suck oil from small tanks. suck the fluid from the power steering. refill. drive a day, then repeat, 'till the fluid comes out clean. then tighten the belt.

i agree with bob2 . your noise cant be from the trans. its from the power steering. you can spray some wd-40 on the power steering belt when someone is turning the wheel and see if the noise goes away. if it does replace the belt. if it doesn't it may be the pump.

daugh......goes to show what a novice I am, i do have to change tranny fluid, it's been a while, but you guys are obviously correct, I meant power steering tank/fluid for the sound....I shall try what was suggested and report, probably this weekend but first i need to replace an arm control bushing and sway bay bushing for a much needed alignment.
