bigger oil filter

i don't think so. that stock oil filter is DINKY...

ah, but beware - the PH3600 is larger, yes, but it protrudes so far that the killer heat from the exhaust manifold will fry that darn thing, unless...

i used a pair of tin snips and a section of 4" furnace pipe, left over from installing a dryer outlet pipe. i just cut the pipe to wrap 1.5 times around the filter and to be .75 inch longer than the filter is tall.

i installed the filter, bent the pipe so it would be tight and slipped it onto the filter. bingo. no need for a clamp. instant heat shield!

no discernible difference, of course. but bound to be able to provide 4x the flow of oil, for those stoplight performances

really?You're joking right?

A larger filter will simply contain more oil. The stock filter was DESIGNED specifically for your car. Why would you put a longer/taller/bigger filter there? There's not any benifit to it and like you've said, it's just closer to the manifold. Hotter oil Does not mean better performance.

Honestly, just a waste of time since the filter prices are the same and now you have something that's able to fall off the car when you're driving.

if you're not smart enough to understand how a larger filter will pass more oil, well, you have my sympathy

I have to partially agree with bob2 as I also run a larger than stock filter (same diameter, just longer). The same diameter is no closer to the header than stock so heat is not a problem. I change the oil every 10k while testing through Blackstone, so I see some benefit from the larger filter. Bob2, don't you think your heat shield may actually be transmitting more heat to the filter due to reduced clearance from the sheild? Guys it's not uncommon to run different than stock filter for a variety of reasons. For example I run a larger filter on my 4.0 tacoma because the oil capacity is 5.7 quarts with stock filter 6.0 with the one I use and for the reasons stated above.

hey wetone

no, i don't think the heat shield transmits more heat. it intervenes in the flow of radiated heat - absorbing the heat that would hit the oil filter, then providing an interim cooling barrier. radiant heat is the thing, here. the piece of metal fits quite loosely, transferring little of the heat it receives. it cools in the airflow, instead

I was assumed that a big filter should be just necessary which contains high quality range for oil filtering to remove contaminates from engine oil.

I just changed my oil today and switched to the longer size WIX filter. No problem with it except one minor irritation: the end cap is ever-so-slightly smaller in diameter than the stock size filter, which means that now I have to run out and get yet another oil filter wrench. I think I must have about ten of them that I've collected over the years; so many cars I've owned have utilized filters that require a unique wrench. Why can't there just be a few different, industry-standard sizes?

If anybody knows of an adjustable oil filter wrench that actually works well, let me know where you got it.
