I have a 1997 avalon xls and i was told that if i wanted to make it fast i could order aftermarket items but under a camry and it would fit, because i cant fine anything strictly for an avalon. so my question is will it work?
It depends on what you want to do. As a previous Avalon owner, its a fast car to begin with ,especially if you keep ECT on. Given the fact that your engine is a 1MZ-FE, you can start there and see what fits into the car.
Remember, preventative maintenance and a few other small changes to the engine while keeping it stock will increase performance.
I'll add more tm, but ask away with what you want to do and I'll try to help you on your way!

Thanks for the reply. I love the fact that it is a fast car naturally but i wanted to do a intake, exhaust, and i dont know what else i could do with out dropping alot of money.
i have a almost stock 97 that runs right. there certainly is no point to adding high performance equipment, as the car can not deal with the power the engine makes right now. there is no posi, or hope for installing a posi... and w/front wheel drive posi would be very dangerous on slick roads.
the wheels just spin. it can not put the power it makes now on the ground. so, why bother? you will receive nothing for your efforts... not to mention screwing up a really nice car, just the way it is.
an aftermarket air cleaner improves engine output more than you would believe...
i used bosh irridium plugs. many say not to use bosh but the irridium worked great! running some lucas through the gas then changing the fuel filter works wonders, as well.
my favorite mod is Greased Lightning teflon treatment. it will really slick things up. you will notice a difference within a few minutes BUT i would not use this product more than every 6,000 miles, as teflon builds up in the rings and causes the engine to begin to use oil, if overdone. get some at o'riley auto parts.
if your avvy runs right more power will not be something you will need
Things to do that are cheap and would help out in the long run (more like maintenance but gives a little more power/comfort to your vehicle)
Go Synthetic - better fuel mileage and better performance on the engine (dont do it if the car has been on conventional oil for its life. The engine is known to have sludge issues that come back to bite you if you aren't ready for a expensive gasket/seal replacements because synthetic is thinner and may come out of the seals that have been worn down. Try a blend and see how well it runs first if you dont know. Don't forget to replace the oil filter!
New Engine Filter - Car needs to breathe right? A new/clean filter would allow more airflow into the engine, increasing performance.
Clean the Throttle Body Intake - A cheap fix that can do wonders to performance and gas consumption (very slight but makes the car perform better). Cleaning the body of the carbon deposits also increases airflow. Will help rough idling and may lower normal idling.
Drain and Refill Tranny Fluid - will allow the car to shift more smoothly, leading to more comfortable ride.
Spark Plugs
Wash and Wax
Now, onto the intake exhaust question you asked:
Given the fact that intake/exhaust kits are relatively inexpensive (give or take), they rob the car of its gas, making a 15-20mpg car into a 12-16mpg car. Also, It would become louder.
The 1MZ-FE does well if you wanted to attach a cold air intake to it, but dropping a KN filter also does the trick if you are short on cash.
The exhaust kits (usually mufflers) usually do nothing in performance (usually increase gas consumption) but instead make loud noises. What you need are replacement exhaust headers paired with good mufflers that will give you the umph you need for what you are trying to do. BEWARE OF DROANING if you go this route, because piping is also important when working on the exhaust. From my experience, stock piping is usually best. A good muffler shop that does custom work may be better off in helping you for this.
A CAI can run you up to $200 and an exhaust kit (muffler set) can run up to $400 (dont get ripped off, just buy a muffler if you want some noise) and headers up to $400.

The Following User Says Thank You to sarsman45 For This Useful Post:
i feel that when people start throwing the word "fast" around in this forum it means "fast for a toyota".
seriously, what toyota (stock) is fast? i guess it depends on your definition of fast. i'm sure there is someone that thinks my wife's solara is fast.
your wife's solara will sho nuff outrun that muskrat on the highway... and so will my avalon. a drag race would belong to you, naturally, as you have rear wheel drive and about twice the displacement.
yes, fast is a perception, just like everything else. my perception of fast has changed since i drove a 67 charger with a 671 protruding from the hood. i don't miss 8 miles/gallon... imagine that today! WOAH!
i suppose fast is relative... to the cars around you. by that standard my avvy is fast, indeed

I have heard a custom Y-pipe is a good bang for the buck mod for these cars, along with a less restrictive cat converter. Though I'm not entirely certain, so don't quote me
There are a few members here I believe, with intakes. One of which has a vid on youtube. Sounds pretty nice.

i agree that fast is a preception but went my avalon takes off next to a civic with some work done i win but comparing a mustang to a avalon is changing car class all together. its comparing apples to oranges and of course a mustang is going to win because it was built to move fast with quick acceleration and has a bigger block and performance parts. if your going to compare cars you have to keep in the same class

lol, you have got to be kidding me! sadly, i don't think that you are.
man, i should have known that my wife's solar could smoke my gt500. what an idiot i am for thinking her car is slow.

of course it's in a different class and the comparison is ridiculous. my daily drive is an impreza wrx and it will hold its own against any toyota and is turbo from the factory.
but i keep the impreza stock and i drive it daily, because to me it's not worth tuning. it's fun to zip around town in though.
but i agree with you that fast is relative and it all depends on what you are comparing to.
