P0773 repair ideas?

Hi everyone, question here. My 1997 Avalon is throwing a P0773 code. From what I have read so far, this has to do with a malfunction with the valve that locks the torque converter Has anyone repaired this? so far I have torn apart the dash to ohm out the solenoid and purchased a gallon of ATF and a new trans filter.

Has anyone fixed this problem?

yes. the solenoid for the overdrive (torque converter lockup) is open. it's the one with the red wire.

you will have a he77 of a time finding one. you will need to drop the valve body to replace it. you will need to record where the long, small bolts came from and an inch-pound torque wrench, to reinstall them.

good luck

Thanks gonzo! the tipoff for the red wire was a real help! the directions from the Toyota service manual was not really clear!

Today, I followed all of the guides to troubleshoot guides for this error code in this guide

http://www.justanswer.com/uploads/sk..._00_camry9.pdf

I checked the ECU, the wiring and they checked fine. when I checked the residtance of the SL Solenoid, I got a reading of 13.2 ohm's I can infer that since the solenoid is still in spec, the solenoid should be fine. should I replace the solenoid anyway?

Gonzo, did you do this repair? did replacing the SL Solenoid fix the problem?

woah. if the solenoid is not open, something else is wrong. the core is to remove the white plug that goes to the tranny and check the resistance to ground there. it's not that easy to get to that plug... the only other thing i can think of is an intermittent ground... wow - that would be causing lots of other problems, as well!

i certainly would not tear into the trans at this point. does your car go into t/c lockup - does the tach gently settle back a few hundred revs as you reach road speed? if so, the solenoid is working...

to tell you the truth, I am not really sure if the thing locks up. I think it must be intermittent. All I can say for certain is that the trans is throwing a code. I am due for an emissions test at the end of the month and in order to buy a registration sticker for the license plate. I must pass my emissions test. Any CEL means an automatic fail of the test.

Is the SL solenoid the one with the single red wire connector? if it is, It ohm's out to 13.2 but i do not hear it actuate when 12V is applied to it. do you think if the solenoid is stuck? would running seafoam trans tune or marvels mystery oil through it help? I was a little leary of adding different chemicals to the trans incase it degrades the clutch packs.

Otherwise I don't know where else to look!

ok... the computer does not care if it works, nor does it know. all it samples is the resistance of the coil on the solenoid. if the solenoid reads 13.8 ohms at the plug, follow the wires on up. as i remember there is another plug, further up. that's where i broke into the circuit, to check the impedance of the coil. it could be the open circuit is in that plug, or even the big white plug on top of the trans. clean contacts, and apply silly clone electric grease

the instrument cover pops oiut quick and easy. pull the bulb out of the check engine light and get your sticker - lol

Don't know for sure about other states, but in NY they plug in to the DLC and read the status to determine whether the MIL is commanded "on", not relying on the easily defeated light bulb.
