Wheel lug nuts thread

I was replacing a tire, and realized that one of the lugs (front passenger) will not tighten. It seems the threads are crushed, so the nut just goes around and around and will not tighten. This really frustrated me for about an hour!

I am thinking that the threads on the mating part of the lug nut is ruined, so is there a part name I can look for to fix this?

Wheel will come off (AGAIN!) if I drive. Thankfully, I was driving slow when this happened.

You will need a new lug nut and lug stud. You have to remove the caliper and rotor and tap out the damaged lug stud from the axle hub. There is a slot where the lug stud can slide out. You can find these parts at you're local auto parts store.

When re-installing, I just push the stud in place and then tighten. When torqued properly the stud should be fully seated correctly. You should not have to 'beat' it back in place.

Yeah I torqued it properly.. but don't understand how this could happen anyways.

This happens often when the bolt is cross threaded or over tightened.

Haha, not as bad as Discount Tire that cross thread FOUR lug nuts on ONE wheel on our van. I had to replace all of them. I would find an independent mechanic that specializes in Toyotas. I did and he is awesome, he was a former ASE Master Tech at Lexus. He invites me into the shop and we discuss what is being fixed on my car and other cars in the shop. Really cool guy, and his prices are very reasonable.

It’s one reason why we try to do as much of the services and repairs ourselves. I would change my own tires if I have both mounting and balancing machine in my little garage. I can't count how many times Firestone lost the hub centric rings on my alloys. As for Sears, they once stacked so much "stick-on" weight on the inside of the wheel that it jammed into the front brake caliper.

Also, many times the lugs can be over-torque because of anti-seize on the studs. Sam's Club did that once when it's highly recommend that the studs be clean and dry when installing the lug nuts to prevent false torque reading.

Your mention of Sears reminds me of this Ron White schtick. He cracks me up. Rated R for language.

I've lost count of how many lug bolts/nuts I've had to replace after the Bozos at the local tire shop get done using their air wrenches on 'em.

This was an easy repair. However, I could not seat the stud properly... there is still about less than a 1/4 inch left but could not get the thing in.

I got my stud at Autozone... I tried to bang the stud in with a hammer, but this did not work. I tried to tighten the stud by torque'ing a nut, and the stud kept spinning as I tried tried to torque it. Am I doing something wrong? Are these studs not supposed to go in all the way???

I did drive with them today (55 mph max) and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but I don't feel safe at all!

You have no way to blame this on NTB. This could be the result of most anybody's screwup on a 12 plus year old car. The stud might have been overtightened long ago and finally just let go.
