the biggest thing I feel that is wrong with the exhaust piping on the 1mz Toyotas is the crazy 90 degree Y-Pipe. Your best bet is to go to an independent muffler and exhaust shop and see what they can do for you. There are also some pretty decent looking prefabricated pieces for the Avalon on Ebay.

man... i agree with this! the rear bank has a 180 degree turn, not a 90! i bet the power gain would be noticeable, just by replacing that idiot thing with a normal header, where both banks went backward, then joined. now, if we could get some bigger sized pipe in the deal...!

this little engine is much more frisky that the tune that toyota put on it will allow .) so like, what would I search for on ebay, avalon headers? i can't find anything there...

Search for solara headers, I think they are made by OBX and require slight modification.

hey pm

this is a great picture of what's wrong!

the rear bank makes a 180 degree turn! that pipe should flow back, not forward, and then join with the other pipe. i am guessing that there are two separate systems for fuel/air - one for each bank. with the huge difference in potential flow/back pressure, there would have to be! and that's more than likely why there are 2 O2 sensors, as well. wow. this is really stupid.

i'm not going to do anything about this 'cause, like I said, my car makes more power than it can put on the ground, right now. if there was a way to install limited slip (which might not be the best idea, with FWD) and increase traction, making the exhaust right would be the next thing I did.

I've had a bunch of hot rods. Now I have a nice car. I'm tempted, at times, but I'm not gonna screw it up. It gets 30 mpg (on a good day) and I like that.

Making power is about burning fuel. Every mod that makes more power gives that engine a way to burn more fuel. The avy makes power buy turning high revs. When it's not revving high, it doesn't burn a lot of fuel. I'll just leave it alone .)
