My Avy has 249k miles and indeed I have really neglected it. And plus about 2-3 weeks I drove it over the paved side ridge of a local road onto the grass all while braking hard at maybe 20 mph, so...some more sounds added to my rattling.
I am correct to assume I need new struts.....as ..even before the recent hard thump, if I go over 40mphs and over a pothole, I hear and feel the floor (well probably arm control) hitting the street.
Also there is the rattling over potholes at lower speed. Control arms have been replaced one about a year ago and the other one about 2 months ago.
I also noticed on side of the sway bar bushing did not look to great.
I am planning to go gabriel quick struts (for the ease of install) in about a month or soo...
What else can cause the rattling and kinda funky handling, everything else looked ok when I replaced the control arm myself (about 2 motnhs ago)....
What could the hard bump have done wrong considering the struts are more then likely shot?

look at the bottom of the car. whatever is hitting the pavement will be shiny...
ok i think after about a year and a half on the struts I am, even quick crap are way better, at least not hitting the road at over 30 mpg over a pot hole, but....
are the kyb hard to put on and all the other parts?
is it dangerous or pretty ok if I rent the tool to compress them (and can I rent it?)
I do my own oil for about 3-4 years on both our cars, replaced a control arm myself, window power motors, some sensor on the concorde and the tie rod bushings, rotors , brakes, etc.... but....
will it be very hard and time consuming? any dangers??
a mechanic I know said one time a struts just poped out almost hitting him when he tried to install it ( i guess he tried to compress it in some redneck way at home for a friend?????)
just wondering if the difference is that great for the quality compared to the time tool I need to use? Also i have been riding like this for a while so anything (plus whatever else I can diagnose and fix when doing this...... sway bar bushings on one side for sure,...) will surely make for an impact I guess..
some people on here seem to be a BIT too enthusiastic... like maybe they have something to gain when you buy this, or that...
on my second year and over 40,000 miles on a set of gabriel quick struts. no worries. no complaints.
if you go the other route better know what you're doing and even then, better be careful. you can get hurt. coil springs meant to hold cars up store a lot of power... more than enough to break any bone in any human body, including the skull!
Bonzo, thks I think anything will be veterans than the way it is now. And at 248k miles I barely even trust my mechanic guy friend. I fixed my window motors today and even being careful I cracked a interior door handle at the screw....
But, going quick struts is easy right...... I mean you just pull old ones out and put new one in right....like no special tool right????
I think next week I will do the 2 fronts and see how it goes....

yes. very easy. just be sure to route the brake hoses so that they do NOT rub on anything!!!!!!!!! the wires to the wheel sensors, as well, but the brake hoses will get you killed. so be careful, ok?
I just put 4 Monroe quick struts on my 98 this summer and will agree with Bonzo. They were pretty easy. Just unhook the brake line bracket and ABS sensor brackets from the strut, remove the two lower bolts, then the top 3 nuts on the strut tower, and remove. Re-install the same way and use the torque setting included with the strut. You might want to put a rust penetrant on the two lower bolts a few days in advance to make the removal easier. I did a brake job at the same time, but you shouldn't have to remove any other components afterwards. You should also get an alignment after you are done.
Monroe often has a "shocktober" sale where you buy 3 get 1 free sale.
