growler !!

my differential (yes, they have a differential) leaks a little. there have been a FEW more issues, on the way to getting this car into the kind of shape i want it to be in... so i forgot about the leak.

on the way home from chicago, it started growling. pulled into a shop and had them fill the diff. they said the trans was low, as well. now... does the trans fluid run into the diff, if it gets low? methinks, it does... 'cause there is only one leak down there.

anyhow, i replaced the last part in the front drive, hoping it would silence the noise (left cv axle). no such luck.

does ANYBODY know anything about the differential? can it be repaired, without removing the trans? it hums and/or growls steadily. i can not enjoy the car like that... aargh! i just spend a thousand $ on the fenders, hood, bumper cover and getting it all painted.

anybody have any experience with the differential? (it's where the axles go into the trans-axle)

On my '98 I can confirm the transmission fills the differential. There is a drain plug for each, but the transmission fills the differential. I confirmed this by leaving the differential drain plug out while filling the transmission until it leaked out of the drain hole.

I would take your car to a reputable transmission shop to have them give you an estimate as to what is going on. We had a similar situation with our 01 Ford Windstar.

The trans also fills the diff on a 1997 as well. I found this out when I rebuilt my valve body and replaced a shift solenoid in my trans. heres a link for the repair manual for the A541E transmission.

A541E Guide
